The Learning Curve

Image
OK, so you know how a while back I said this year would be as good as I can make it?  Having remarried and found some much needed stability?  Weeeellll.  It looks like things are coming together more than I ever expected. I registered, paid my admin fee, and was accepted back into the University that I quit so many years ago.  I am also eligible for school funds through the Veteran's Administration. I think I'm in shock.  No.  I know I'm in shock. You see I wasn't looking to go back into a degree plan.  I just wanted to take a couple of classes on metal working...nothing fancy.  Those classes, however, are offered as part of a curriculum, therefore are the standard rate if taken alone.  There is no way I could afford a $750 class, much less three of them.  After some panic and some tears, I began to look over the university website and found a link for veterans.  I perused and found a link to a GI bill that I never knew existe...

Food. For thought.

Image
Yeah.  Food.  You know that stuff....we need it to live...some of us are addicted to it....some of us are afraid of it....some of us only deal with it because we have to.  I'm that gal right there at the end. It was impossible to get met to eat properly when I was a child.  I've always craved salty things so my mom would keep saltine crackers and whatnot in the house.  In an effort to keep me drinking water the way I should she'd let me have them fairly often.  Beyond that, I had the typical kid diet that most children today enjoy....lots of starch, lots of salt and sugar.  Most children in the woods in the late 70's, early 80's didn't get to be too picky, I was a rare kid.  I remember being punished repeatedly by my parents, friends parents, aunts, uncles, etc, for being such a picky eater.  My second grade teacher refused to let me get away with not eating what she believed I should.  There were several standoffs at lunch that ye...

Walking in to the New Year.....

Image
I think 2013 has been good....it had to be right?  Business is picking up, the kids are healthy, neither house has fallen in on itself, the bills are paid, the trucks run.... I think everyone sets themselves up to try to make major changes from one year to the next.  Each New Years is like a new slate, clean and fresh, ready for new beginnings.  Everyone wants to put away that one bad habit they just can't kick or take up something new they always wanted to try.  Still others are searching for that peace:  the end to that bad relationship, the release of toxic people or ideas, or perhaps simply to clarify their own mind and inner daemons.  I am by no means immune to any of this.  Each year starts off with the classic, "I will lose weight".  There was one year that I did it, I maintained my figure and was satisfied with the image in the mirror.  I will be there again.  Apologies in advance if any of my posts are riddled with fitness mot...

Liz's Year 2013

Image
Things I accomplished this year: Bought a month of tanning at a tanning salon Went on a cruise Had a beautifully planned wedding Spent money on clothing that I put a lot of thought & effort into Found out who my ex really is and released him Changed jobs Successfully adjusted my eating habits Began discovering who I Am. Watched my girl grow up into a young lady Made new friends and let go of false ones Found out love is not a four letter word This year was eye opening.  I walked into it believing that it would be epic.  2013, turned 36 on the 13th....I love numbers and numerology, I naturally assumed that great things were around the corner.  It has been epic for reasons I could never have seen coming.  There have been awakenings for me that were long overdue, or perhaps not.  Perhaps it has all happened exactly as it should have.  My Honey is a firm believer in allowing things to work themselves out as they will.  He doesn't force an...

Limits.

Miranda Lambert and I have gotten to be pretty good friends the last few years.  Southern women are unique in the fact that we rarely tell someone what we really think of them.  It's just not polite.  Now we'll bless their hearts till we turn blue, but until we've been pushed into a corner there's a grace period of: "let's see how far this is actually going to go before I go completely white trash on'em".  Well ya'll, I was born white trash. Don't get your panties in a twist over the verbiage, white trash/redneck, it's sort of like calling someone in South Louisiana a Coonass.  An outsider can't call someone that, they didn't earn the right to use those words on a local.  I can call myself that because I know that my daddy worked as hard as he could for as long as he could, and my mom picked up that torch when he was physically unable.  This earned my little family a small plot of land, a single wide trailer and a myriad of tr...

Reflections and Resolutions

Image
It's been a hell of a New Years Day...I've cleaned, scrubbed, wiped down, picked up, thinned out and shredded all the things in the house that needed attention.  I've not been this tired in a while, but it's a good kind of tired.  I have a lot to reflect on from this past year.  There were a lot of firsts this year, I made new friends, rekindled some old relationships, and had a mostly positive experience.  I made some milestones with my honey and our family.  I am anxious to start this year on a different foot with a new outlook. I don't want to do resolutions as such this year, I'd rather set goals that will work toward making me a better person.  I've already started one of them.  I've begun doing some research that I haven't done since I lived overseas.  I had a lot of time on my hand then, a lot of time to think and study.  There is no reason I can't do that now.  I just have to learn how to budget my time. For the last year I h...

2012...In Review

Image
While I'm sick at home with the latest crud, I figured I'd take the time to update some Facebook photos and start putting my year together, since I'm bound and determined that next year will kick major ass.  I did a photo YIR, now a written one. January started out with what has become a beginning of the year regular:  the Mid-Winter Fair and Rodeo.  I waited 15 years to see one the first year we went.  I've lived in Lafayette for 17, and had never once been to that rodeo.  I'm a country girl, rodeos are something we do, I love them.  We moved on into the year with the usual festivals and concerts.  My daughter and I have made Festival Internationale , Mardi Gras and Festivales L'Acadiens et Creoles a yearly must.  Those are our favourites, there are plenty of other festivals throughout Acadiana that we try to make, but those are the best in our humble opinions.  This year I was lucky enough to have my wonderful Sister and her children joi...

New Beginnings

Image
Ok. So I have this theory that next year is going to be my year.  It's got to be.  I mentioned in a prior blog that I'm not exactly on board with the Mayan prophesy slated for December.  I do believe the world, as we know it, is going to change....but it's not going to end exactly.  All you gotta do is read all the headlines and listen to what Mother Earth is telling you.  That being said, on to 2013.  The word Triskaidekaphobia means fear of the number 13.  I do not have this.  I embrace that number and all it's bad reputation.  I was born on the 13th of the month and I have had several Friday the 13th birthdays over the years.  They are typically pretty good ones.  Some version of the number usually shows itself to me, and I will almost always use it when choosing lotto numbers.  I am not good with  mathematics, but I do believe that numbers and numerology are sacred and all around us.  The number 3 and it's...
